Mandate: to provide a healthy sustainable future for our community.

We have been an environmental advocate in the community for 30 years.  We strive to provide a healthy, sustainable future for our community.

Future Projects:

Quality of life improvements such as pesticide bylaws, green taxes initiatives, building bylaws, waste water  distribution, public transport review, alternate energies, greenways, environmental mapping, Swan Lake wetlands park, and  job creation through waste reduction education, 1 stop  recycling, compost learning garden, and apartment

recycling.

Currently we seek funding for:

a) creation of educational displays on a pesticide alternatives education garden,  on smart transportation, and on smart growth at the Okanagan Science Centre.

b) smart transportation initiatives such as carpool.ca and providing cycling helmets, bicycles, bike route signs, infrastructure, and safety training for local area cyclists.

Recent  Contributions to the Community through SENS:

*public education resulting in removal of incineration from NORD's Waste Reduction Plans - recycling NOT abandoned!

*establishing fall leaf exchange events to reduce landfill waste and encourage home composting. The City looks after this program now.

*developing and coordinating the first organic community garden program.

*with the support of a $ 120,000 HRDC Grant, developing and coordinating  a Growing Hope and Skills Program to train 12 unemployed youth about sustainable gardening, composting and environmental practices.

*bringing in speakers monthly on a variety of  sustainable environment topics.

*Advocating for formation of a local NORD Environmental Advisory Committee .

* Over $20,000 in grant funding used to create solar/alternative energy, smart growth, and pesticide alternatives displays at the Okanagan Science Centre.

* With Social Planning Council, Ribbons of Green Society, City of Vernon, many local donations and $75,000 in Federal funding, initiated Changing Lanes to educate on Climate Change + Green House Gases and provide smart transportation alternatives -  bike routes, carpool.ca, bike camps for kids and more!    Changing Lanes II  in 2004?
