Good Food Box

The Good Food Box is a volunteer-run, non-profit, produce-buying cooperative for those people who find it difficult to stretch their food dollars to include fresh fruits and vegetables. Each $12.00 Good Food Box contains approximately $24.00 worth of fresh fruit and vegetables, purchased from local farmers when possible. People place their orders and pay the $15.00 by the second Wednesday of the month; boxes are available for pick up on the following Thursday (i.e., the third Thursday of the month). Delivery is an option in the Vernon area for an additional cost of $3.00 per box.
The program currently operates in Vernon, Armstrong, Lumby, Enderby Westside and Falkland. Call the following numbers to find out the distribution points in each community:

Community Kitchens is a program that supports individuals to use their resources more effectively to feed their families on a limited budget. The program offers practical skills in budgeting, food preparation plus meals to take home to feed their families. Learn shopping, cooking skills and nutrition for families on limited budgets. Teaches basic cooking skills, meal budgeting, menu planning and healthy eating skills. Community kitchens are available in Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby and Salmon Arm.

The North Okanagan Food Security Coalition is comprised of representatives of community social service organizations, churches and members of the general public. The members are working collectively towards the creation of a local sustainable food system and the reduction of poverty and hunger by a combination of teaching, lobbying and the provision of food supports programs. The vision of the Coalition is to create a community in which all residents are able to feed themselves and their families nutritiously and sufficiently with knowledge, dignity and without “strings” or judgments.
